Governor targets big oil companies Thu, 20 Mar 2008 18:46:00 CST Members of the Alabama Legislature need to set aside their partisan differences and support Gov. Bob Riley in his efforts to prevent the big oil companies from taking Alabama's irreplaceable natural gas resources without paying a fair price for them.
Funding police anti-drug work not wise policy Wed, 19 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST In response to "Anti-drug effort must be funded" (March 12), I completely disagree.
Such 'change' not for better Wed, 19 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST Sen. Obama wants your vote, promising to bring "change" to America. His idea of change for ending partisanship is for the Republicans to change their views to match those of the Democrats.
Tighten terms in predator bill Wed, 19 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST House Bill 92 would go a long way to address the child-predator loophole in Alabama law. However, its current wording invites abuse.
Our politics still better than others Wed, 19 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST "American politics is dirtiest of all, especially the presidential race."
Samaritan's values in Anniston Fri, 21 Mar 2008 11:11:46 CDT When our group of high school students arrived in Anniston, we were retold the story of The Good Samaritan: A man is walking down a street and is mugged and beaten. Two religious figures walk by him, but they refuse to assist the man because they deem him unclean. Eventually, a Samaritan walks by, sees the man, puts him on his animal and carries him to an inn.

Your View: Shameless Plug?, AU [un]Alert, Hey Mister Get Your Facts Correct Thu, 13 Mar 2008 01:00:00 -0400Tag on Burk news story deemed wrong by readerEditor, The Auburn Plainsman: I find it disdainful how selfish your paper and a lot of other people are being about the murder recently. I stopped reading your column about the story just two paragraphs into it. Reason being? Within two paragraphs you somehow managed to squeeze in two different plugs for the newspaper and how awesome it is. |
Our View: Questions, concerns over campus safety sweep through the Plains Thu, 13 Mar 2008 01:00:00 -0400 After a horrible tragedy, it is natural to take a step back and reflect on exactly what happened. You look at what was done, and argue over what should have been done. It is simple human nature to do this. Thankfully, we can all breathe a sigh of relief with the knowledge that Burk’s killer was apprehended by authorities within 96 hours of the killing. Law enforcement officials from all over the state and nation came together to help put a murderer behind bars.
Editorial: A Spirit That Is Not Afraid Thu, 13 Mar 2008 01:00:00 -0400 “This has been one of the saddest weeks in the history of Auburn University,” our President Jay Gogue said Monday. A little more than a week has passed since we lost one of our own to a senseless act of unimaginable violence. While covering the story around the clock since last Wednesday, I have been amazed at the reaction and steadfastness of this University. When something like this happens, it shows the kindness of Auburn University. When I came for my campus tour as a high school senior, someone tried to explain the concept of the “Auburn family.”

Our View: Student Action Network deserves right to be questioned, heard by SGA Senate Thu, 06 Mar 2008 00:00:00 -0500 Monday was the second SGA Senate for 23 newly-elected senators. At that Senate meeting, a new campus organization, Student Action Network, applied for status as a provisional organization status. The Student Action Network is a group of students who wanted to create a campus organization to raise awareness about the Iraq War. After much contentious debate, the Senate denied the organization status in a voice vote.
Your View: Gun column not logical or accurate Thu, 06 Mar 2008 00:00:00 -0500Gun column not logical or accurateEditor, The Auburn Plainsman: It appears your editorial on allowing guns on campus to be severely flawed. In the course of writing the article, did you do any research? It appears you did not. In the article, you state, “The bill would allow professors and ROTC cadets to carry guns on Alabama’s various campuses.” Maybe I misunderstood you, but this statement is very misleading. |
Editorial: We don’t hate. We appreciate. Thu, 06 Mar 2008 00:00:00 -0500 When I was at a bar last weekend, a guy came up to me. I hate stereotypes, but in this case an exception is key toward making my case. He was the stereotypical Southern fraternity guy. He accused me and this paper of being, in many ways, anti-Greek. While I was more than willing to respond, I was not about to engage in a debate at 1:30 in the morning at 17-16 . So instead of an endless conversation, I decided to opt for a written statement to explain and defend the policies of this paper.

RANTS AND RAVES: Agency hit for financial oversight Fri, 21 Mar 2008 18:32:00 CST RANT: For the Alabama Forestry Commission, which was cited by State Examiners of Public Accounts for several failures to follow adequate accounting procedures. The most serious problem involved the state agency's failure to adequately monitor outside groups that the agency funded using state and federal monies.
Schools, colleges fight over funds Sat, 22 Mar 2008 19:03:00 CST The situation is far from normal when it comes to the Legislature preparing a budget for the coming fiscal year: Unlike recent years, there won't be a lot of growth in revenues for state officials to spread around; in fact, revenues will fall far short of what is needed and lawmakers will be cutting the education budget.
Obama critic's memory short Thu, 20 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST Faulkner University religion dean Cecil May was quoted in Wednesday's Advertiser as saying he found it disingenuous that Barack Obama would seek unity, yet follow a reverend who preached divisiveness. What I find disingenuous is May's short memory.
Rants and Raves Thu, 20 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST RANT: For Alabama's reluctance to be serious about reforming its gravely flawed taxation system, a reluctance which leads to acts such as the federal lawsuit recently filed challenging the state's ludicrously low property tax as a segregation-era relic that starves schools. The courts are hardly the best place for broad-based tax reform. -- RAVE: For the commendable questioning of priorities by state Rep. John Knight, D-Montgomery, who rightly took issue with some proposed cuts in public health programs in the governor's General Fund budget. The cuts would have only minimal impact on the overall budget, but significant impact on individual lives. -- RANT: For the explosive -- and damaging -- growth in Alabama's population of wild hogs. The big-tusked beasts are tremendously destructive and a sow can have three litters in 14 months, with as many as 14 piglets in a litter. They're hunted, but not in numbers anywhere near great enough to curb the population growth.
Nation enjoys many blessings Thu, 20 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST God bless America -- for the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who train and fight and die to protect us from enemies foreign and domestic; God bless America -- for the business owner and businessman who puts his own wealth at risk to bring goods and services to us and the world.

Bush won't accept blame Thu, 20 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST President Bush's address to Wall Street and America urging restraint is a classic case of "Don't do as I do, do as I say do."
Experience issue long before Obama's time Fri, 21 Mar 2008 12:55:00 CST Why is it that those who don't want to see Obama in the White House continue to sing the same old song: "He lacks experience."
Support system vital to success Fri, 21 Mar 2008 12:56:00 CST The unyielding reality of incarceration in Alabama is that very few inmates die in prison. The overwhelming majority will be released at some point and be faced with the challenge of re-entering society.
Hawks pose real threat to pets Fri, 21 Mar 2008 12:55:00 CST Recently I read about the red-tailed hawks that are nesting in downtown Prattville.
Judge Obama on his own merits Fri, 21 Mar 2008 12:55:00 CST Sen. Barack Obama must not be held responsible for what his pastor says. He must be held responsible for his own actions and for what he has written.

Proposed Medicaid funding cuts shortsighted Sun, 23 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST I agree with Rep. Knight and Sen. Bedford. I don't think the cancer screening funds should be cut. It will cost Medicaid more money by treating an advanced cancer.
Expectations must be far higher Sun, 23 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST If the director of Alabama's environmental agency can make what amounts to a C on his evaluation and still have the evaluators say he "significantly exceeds expectations," those expectations plainly are too low. Alabamians are well justified in wondering just what the members of the Environmental Management Commission expect of Trey Glenn.
Too bad 'prophet' wasn't born earlier Sun, 23 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST Glenn Dean's assessment of the War Between the States rings hollow in a number of ways. Are we just supposed to forget the 30,000 Alabamians killed in the war?
Anti-fraud league issues invitation Sun, 23 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST The Democracy Defense League would like to announce its first statewide meeting on April 1 in the state Capitol auditorium from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Gas prices do little for driving habits Sun, 23 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST I currently drive daily to accomplish two hours of part-time work. All of the mileage is from Taylor Road down Vaughn Road and the East Boulevard to McGehee Road.
Funding anti-drug efforts wise investment Mon, 24 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST I read with interest the response to "Anti-drug effort must be funded" by Loretta Nall. What struck me were the inaccuracies in her point of view which are most assuredly based on misinformation.
Law, not religion, rules in court Mon, 24 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST With the discredited former Chief Justice Roy Moore relegated to the margins of Alabama politics, one might think that the improper injection of personal religious beliefs into judicial actions also has been safely set aside. One would be wrong, as the actions of a south Alabama circuit judge have made all too clear.
Opinion addressed double-dipping Mon, 24 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST I am puzzled by all the difficulty in stopping the "double dipping" by the members of the Alabama Legislature.
Writer distorted Obama's stands Mon, 24 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST Dale Hill stated Republican views, claiming Obama's idea of "change" is for Republicans to change their views to match those of Democrats. This is false.
It's Calhoun County's award, too Wed, 26 Mar 2008 05:15:46 CDT Recently, The Star reported that the Anniston Runners Club had won the coveted Road Runners Club of America's National Road Race of the Year for our 2007 Woodstock 5K, the highest award given by the RRCA. This is your race, Calhoun County, so by all rights, this is your award, too. Congratulations!
Obama's lesson Wed, 26 Mar 2008 05:15:46 CDT For a people so obsessed with race, we are exceptionally bad at talking about it. Some of us fear talking about it, get nervous and fluttery and act as if this is a topic polite people should avoid. Some of us are unequipped to talk about it, too ignorant of the history that undergirds it, too willing to bend that history toward ideological ends, too blithely dismissive of the fact that history matters, that past informs present informs future.
Senate still shows little progress Tue, 25 Mar 2008 23:00:00 CST Today marks the halfway point of the 2008 regular session of the Legislature, the 15th meeting day in a session the state constitution restricts to 30 meeting days within a 105-day span. As it has been in the first half of the session and as it was last year, the impediment to significant progress is the contentious Senate.

Our View: Cheers to Hayes and SGA Senate, jeers to College Thu, 27 Mar 2008 04:11:39 -0400 Ah, the Student Action Network, the scrappy provisional status organization that continues to survive every fight it has been thrown into. First, it battled the O-Board. Then, it took on the full Senate in a bureaucratic cage match. Recently, it faced a no-holds-barred title match against the reigning campus demagogues, the leadership of the comfortably entrenched College Republicans. As an organization that strongly supports the freedom of speech, we here at The Plainsman have to love these folks.
