| What do you like on your biscuits? Tue, 01 Apr 2008 22:11:00 CST A biscuit is about as Southern as it gets. And with the Montgomery Biscuits' season opener just a day away, everybody seems to have biscuits on the brain -- the baseball team as well as the flaky, buttery treat. People love them plain, dripping with butter and syrup or jelly, smothered in gravy or filled with sausage, bacon or country ham. White Lily, a Tennessee company that makes biscuit flour as well as frozen biscuits, is conducting a biscuit-topping survey through April 30 with just one question: What do you like on your biscuits? The folks at the Montgomery Advertiser love to talk about food, especially the Southerners. Here's what some of them had to say: "I love cheese biscuits. It takes any meal to a whole new level." -- Toni Jimerson, news clerk "I like grape or apple jelly on my biscuits. My father used to put syrup on his, and I tried to do the same thing, but in my adult years, I figured out how much sugar I was piling on. Somehow, the jelly seems just as tasty and not quite as bad for my body." -- Wanda Lloyd, executive editor "If I have a biscuit, it's gonna need something on it like chicken or sausage. I'll have one on occasion at Riverwalk Stadium when I'm seeing the Biscuits play." -- Scott Brown, publisher "I like butter and molasses. Reminds me of breakfast when I was a kid in rural upstate South Carolina." -- Terry Manning, multimedia editor "I'm not a big fan of biscuits. I'm not a big bread eater, really. But I will make concessions for my mother's sausage gravy and biscuits. In fact, I think gravy makes just about anything taste better." -- Erica Pippins, My Life editor "When I make biscuits at home, I brush melted butter on them when there's seven minutes to go. Browns them nicely and adds just the right amount of salty, buttery goodness. When I get biscuits out of the house, (it's) either bacon or strawberry preserves." -- Hilary Funk, reporter "I dress up my biscuit in two ways: Drizzle some sugar-sweet syrup over it or raspberry jam." --Hazel Scott, digital/data desk "I like jam, usually strawberry jam, on my biscuits." -- Rick Harmon, state government/business editor "I like biscuits with butter and Alaga Syrup. Nothing beats a hot biscuit with butter melted in it and warm syrup to eat it with. My mama used to make buttermilk biscuits for us, and we ate them that way." -- Kwan Robinson White, assistant to the executive editor "Honey or syrup." -- Andre Coe, reporter |
