Trojans postpone QB decision Tue, 14 Oct 2008 17:43:00 CST Troy hasn't settled on a starting quarterback just yet. Tanner Jones and Levi Brown shared snaps equally for a third straight practice Tuesday in their battle to replace the injured Jamie Hampton. Offensive coordinator Neal Brown said Monday that Troy would decide on a starter after the coaching staff evaluated Monday night's practice, but apparently neither Jones or Brown stood out enough. Troy (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) hosts Florida International (3-3, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday. Hampton was Troy's starter all season, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in last week's game at Florida Atlantic.

GOP chairman criticizes Bright for not speaking out against negative ads Tue, 14 Oct 2008 17:03:00 CST The chairman of the Alabama Republican Party said Tuesday that Democratic congressional candidate Bobby Bright has broken the clean campaign pledge he signed and shared with the media. Chairman Mike Hubbard, who is also a state representative from Auburn, reminded the media on Tuesday of Bright's pledge that he would not tolerate anyone defaming his opponent, Republican Jay Love. Love, a state representative from Montgomery, and Bright, the three-term mayor of Montgomery, are in a hotly contested election for the 2nd Congressional District. Hubbard criticized Bright for not speaking out against the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee running negative ads against Love. He said the DCCC has spent $375,652 to date attacking Love. "I think that adds up to Bobby Bright's word being worthless," Hubbard said. Bright has said he let it be known he did not want negative ads in the race. He previously told the Montgomery Advertiser that he did not support and disagreed with ads by the DCCC that attacked Love for being a millionaire, but not paying for health care for 80 percent of his employees. Love has said those employees were part-time, many of them in school, and that he offered insurance to his full-time employees. "I personally have four groups - including my opponent - attacking me, and I would love it if all of those people who are putting out negative ads met and agreed to stay positive in their message," Bright said in a statement. "Not one cent of advertising money from my campaign has been spent on negative ads, and I think on election day, the voters are going to chose our positive message of economic development and strong, ethical leadership above the lies and misrepresentations put out by the other side." -- posted by Sebastian Kitchen

Freshmen lead Tide to Pate Invitational championship Tue, 14 Oct 2008 16:45:00 CST Powered by a pair of Tuscaloosa freshmen who shot under-par final rounds, Alabama's golf team won to its third consecutive Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate championship here Tuesday at Birmingham's Old Overton Club. The Crimson Tide finished six shots ahead of second place Auburn. Alabama shot a 10-under 830 to finish first, followed by Auburn (836), Southern Methodist (838), Baylor (839), UNLV (841), North Carolina (843), Georgia State (847), North Florida (855) and UAB (855), Memphis (858), North Carolina-Wilmington (865), and Samford (888). "It's a good feeling," said Alabama golf coach Jay Seawell. "It's a new team. A lot of new guys trying to learn how to win, and I thought they did a fantastic job today in their first chance to win. They battled and competed all day long and we were able eek it out." Alabama, ranked No. 8 in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches' poll and No. 10 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, won the tournament playing four freshmen and a senior, All-Southeastern Conference golfer Matthew Swan. "I think everybody stayed in there, stayed composed," Swan said. "I really liked how Weaver and Hunter Slatton played really well. They hadn't done that the first two (rounds), and they came back today and played well in the final round. I think that shows a lot about them and our team as well. I think that this win is a good win to get under our belt. It's such a young team." Four of Alabama's five golfers finished among the top 25 individuals. Bud Cauley finished tied for ninth at two-under par 208. Hunter Hamrick (209) and Hunter Slatton (209) were tied for 11th, Swan was tied for 15th at 210 and Weaver was tied for 35th at 216. "They're starting to get more and more comfortable," said Seawell of his young lineup. "They're not totally green anymore. Today was a new environment, but they're getting more and more comfortable with college golf and me and how we handle things and the everyday stuff we do. Each day we're going to get better. That's our goal. And if we do that, we'll be a fine team at the end of the year." SMU's Kelly Kraft was the medalist, finishing at six-under 204 on the par-70 course. The JPNI was the third of four fall tournaments Alabama will play. Its final fall tournament, before picking back up the season in February, is the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windermere, Fla., on Oct. 26-28.

Cost of inmate healthcare increases for Montgomery County Tue, 14 Oct 2008 15:57:00 CST Montgomery County will be paying more to provide medial care to inmates starting in December. The healthcare provider, Quality Correctional Healthcare Inc., is hiring more staff to accommodate the expanded jail facility that is scheduled to open in January. Since the staff will be treating more inmates, the company requested an increase in funding. The monthly fee will increase by $15,221. The county currently pays $140,821 a month, and the adjustment to $156,042 is based on 700 inmates. That number is expected to continue to rise after the new wing of the jail opens, according to Sheriff D.T. Marshall. And when it does, it will cost the county $11,146 each month for every increase of 50 inmates. The increase must happen for two consecutive months for the increase to take place. As of Tuesday, the county jail population was at 630 inmates, but it was just below 700 inmates last week, according to Marshall. -- Jill Nolin
