| School boards and superintendents coming to Montgomery Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:40:00 CST School board members and superintendents from around the state will attend a two-day training seminar to learn how to build community support for schools through effective communication and partnerships. The Alabama Association of School Boards School Board Member Academy training conference on "Leadership for Community Engagement" will be held at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel in downtown Montgomery on Oct. 19-20. The conference is sponsored by AASB as part of its School Board Member Academy. Established in 1986, the academy is an ongoing school for school board members designed to improve skills and knowledge in all areas of boardmanship. The AASB represents all of the state's local school boards and serves more than 850 education leaders. For almost 60 years, AASB has promoted the interests of local lay control of public education. | Grant funds coming to Alabama Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:39:00 CST The Alabama Association of School Boards, The National School Boards Association and the Center for Public Education, CPE have received a two-year $447,000 grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts to build upon its far-reaching initiative to engage school boards in support of high quality, voluntary pre-Kindergarten education. The new funding will enable CPE to add two new partners to its pre-K network: the Alabama Association of School Boards and the Kentucky School Boards Association. The Pre-K partnership has two overarching goals: —Engage school board support on behalf of high-quality, voluntary pre-kindergarten in the partner states; and —Disseminate information broadly about the short- and long-term benefits of pre-K to other states and nationally through NSBA's networks and conferences. --Posted by Jenn Rowell |
| PBS airs documentary on morality of killing in war this week Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:38:00 CST PBS will air a documentary, Soldiers of Conscience, at 8 p.m. on Oct. 16. The film was made with permission from the Army and looks at the morality of killing through the perspective of eight U.S. soldiers. | Film on immigration being shown Thursday Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:37:00 CST Alabama Appleseed is showing "The Visitor" at 5 p.m. Thursday in room 114 of the Jones School of Law on the Faulkner University campus. The film is directed by Tom McCarthy and follows an American college professor and a young immigrant couple as they deal with the treatment of immigrants and the legal process post-Sept. 11. Organizers plan to poll participants before and after to gather their thoughts on immigration. | Red Ribbon kick-off Friday Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:36:00 CST The Substance Abuse Youth Networking Organization, SAYNO, a River Region United Way Agency, in conjunction with the City of Montgomery and Montgomery Public Schools will hold its 21st Annual Red Ribbon Kick Off on Friday from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 noon at the Garrett Coliseum. More than 1,500 elementary school children along with the citywide campaign t-shirt design winner will be in attendance. Superintendent John Dilworth is the honorary chairman, and the co-chairs are Ellen McNair, senior vice president of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and Rev. Edward J. Nettles, Sr. of Freewill Missionary Baptist Church. Local elementary chorale groups, dance and cheer teams and mascots will provide entertainment. | Blount Elementary's Fall Festival on Thursday Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:35:00 CST Blount Elementary will hold its annual Fall Festival at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Wristbands can be purchased in advanced and are $10 for kids ages three and up, and $1 for adults. Children under age three are free. The gate price for wristbands will be $15 for kids and $2 for adults. The event will include inflatable ridges, games, full concessions and more. The festival will be held at Edward Thompson Park on Ray Thorington Road, across the street from Blount. The rain date for this event is Oct. 23. | Peace Week kicks off Monday Sun, 12 Oct 2008 17:33:00 CST McIntyre Middle is participating in "Peace Week" this week. It kicks off Monday with the introduction of its new student organization S.A.V.E. — Students Against Violence Everywhere. McIntyre's chapter will be the first in Montgomery and only the second in Alabama. The S.A.V.E. organization, strives to decrease the potential for violence in schools and communities by promoting meaningful student involvement, education and service opportunities in effort to establish, support and grow SAVE chapters. As a part of "Peace Week" McIntyre will have a "Pennies for Peace" and "Stuffed Animal Drive." Faculty, staff, and students will contribute pennies and stuffed animals to donate to local domestic violence shelters. Coach Tommy Tuberville said Sunday he will look at freshman Barrett Trotter and little-used reserve Neil Caudle during the Tigers' open date. Both Kodi Burns and Chris Todd continued to struggle in a 25-22 loss to Arkansas. The Tigers fell out of the national rankings Sunday after losing back-to-back Southeastern Conference games for the first time since 2003. They play at West Virginia on Oct. 23. Tuberville said injured cornerback Jerraud Powers is "50-50" for the game. He also said doctors planned to X-ray Tray Blackmon's wrist and weren't ruling out surgery as an option.
