| Biblical teachings warn against slothfulness Thu, 26 Jun 2008 23:00:00 CST Those who work crossword puzzles on a regular basis know that a three-toed sloth is an ai. A sloth is a slow-moving arboreal (tree-dwelling) mammal and the name ai was given to this creature because of its high-pitched screech. Both words have additional meanings. Ai is also the name of a city that played a wild role in Israel's conquest of the Promised Land. They lost their first attempt to capture the place. They later learned that the lord had deserted them because of the sin of one of their own, a greedy man named Achan. Once the culprit was ousted and punished, a second endeavor proved successful. This was bad news for the Ai-ites. To learn how bad, read Joshua 7 and 8. We are perhaps more familiar with sloth as a sinful behavior. Doubleday Dictionary's definition is a classic: "Disinclination to exertion." This is a dignified way of saying lazy, indolent, idle, sluggish, shiftless or slow. The crazy, hazy, lazy days of summer are now upon us and for many the inclination to exertion begins to wane a bit. Some consider this practice somewhat less than reprehensible. The Russian novelist Dostoevsky described the word sluggard as "... a calling and vocation, it is a career." Charles Lamb wrote: "I wish that all the year were a holiday. I am sure that indolence, indefeasible indolence, is the true state of man and business the invention of the Old Teaser, who persuaded Adam's master to give him an apron and set him a-hoeing." James Thurber was more succinct in his praise of idleness: "It is better to have loafed and lost than never to have loafed at all." Which is all very well and good, but Scripture takes a dim view of this activity (or lack thereof). "Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor ... the lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent man prizes his possessions ... the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied." (Proverbs 12:24, 27-13:4 New International Version) In his advice to his young protg, Paul cautions him about young widows: "Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to." (I Timothy 5:13) He also said: "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord." (Romans 12:11) The author of Hebrews sums up the Biblical teaching briefly: "We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who, through faith and patience, inherit what has been promised." (Hebrews 6:12) There's a point to all this -- when the rabbit sat down to rest and take a nap, remember what the turtle did. Al Perkins is a retired Episcopal priest who lives in Montgomery.
